UNISA

UNISA stands for University of South Africa.

And it really is the Univerity of South Africa, helping more students than all our campus universities combined.  In fact, it is one of the biggest universities in the world!

Having UNISA means that hundreds of thousands South Africans get access to Higher Education that would not be able to study otherwise.

Who studies at UNISA?

UNISA is traditionally for students who need to work and study at the same time.  The students are on average your more mature students, and the average age is 31.

However, as space in universities gets more and more contested many people just out of school are now applying to study at UNISA.  The Fees must fall violence and disruption has also made many people feel safer if they can study from  home.

How many students study at UNISA?

UNISA has over 400,000 students enrolled and they are in a process of trying to stabilise numbers.

This means that rules have been made much more stringent for students that do not pass all their subjects, or that do not study enough subjects every year.  You can no longer take a year off and keep studying – you have to pass at least 3 subjects per year to continue with your studies.

They are also trying to make sure that the student body is more representative – so quotas are being used to ensure more spaces are kept for students that were previously disadvantaged.

How Many students apply to study at UNISA annually?

In 2016 over 400,000 students applied to study in one application period!  You can imagine that not all of these applicants can be taken on to study at the institution.

Will I get accepted at UNISA if I apply?

As you can see from the crazy number of students that apply to study at UNISA not everyone can get in.

Even if you meet the entry requirements, or vastly exceed them, there is no guarantee that you will be able to study at UNISA.

If I apply to study at UNISA when do I find out if I get in?

You find out 3 to 6 months after you apply whether you have received a space to study at UNISA.

Remember also that if you are accepted you will need to register to study in the next registration period.  If you miss that registration period you will have to apply all over again.
